Description

Red Monarda (also Scarlet Beebalm or Red Bergamot)
Monarda didyma L.

Perennial native plant

Height:  2 to 4 feet

Width:  2  to 3 feet

Flower color:  red

Bloom time:  summer, fall

Light needed:  sun, part sun

Soil needed:  Rich, moist, acid soils.  Juglone (black walnut) tolerant.

Notes:  Member of the mint family, so it spreads quickly but it is fairly easy to control.  It is susceptible to powdery mildew, but some cultivars, such as ‘Jacob Cline’, are somewhat mildew resistant. Reduce mildew by providing good drainage and air circulation.
