Description
Red Monarda (also Scarlet Beebalm or Red Bergamot)
Monarda didyma L.
Perennial native plant
Height: 2 to 4 feet
Width: 2 to 3 feet
Flower color: red
Bloom time: summer, fall
Light needed: sun, part sun
Soil needed: Rich, moist, acid soils. Juglone (black walnut) tolerant.
Notes: Member of the mint family, so it spreads quickly but it is fairly easy to control. It is susceptible to powdery mildew, but some cultivars, such as ‘Jacob Cline’, are somewhat mildew resistant. Reduce mildew by providing good drainage and air circulation.
