Description
Swamp milkweed
Asclepias incarnata L.
Perennial native plant
Height: 2 to 5 feet
Width: 2 to 4 feet
Flower color: pink
Bloom time: summer
Light needed: sun, part shade
Soil needed: moist, wet. Rich, wet, very muddy to average garden moisture. One of the few ornamentals that thrives in mucky clay soils.
Notes: This is one of the milkweeds that monarch caterpillars must eat to survive. Excellent for wetland gardens. When it gets aphids, leave the plant alone unless it looks sick. Then, if necessary, hand spray with a water stream to get rid of them.
Attracts butterflies, including both the adults and caterpillars of monarchs – and also hummingbirds.
Resistant to deer
